Mug, James & Tilla Waters

Client: James & Tilla Waters
Year: 2017
‘We went into the filming process with an open mind about what the film might look like and were happy to let Nick take the lead as he inspired such confidence. It became clear that his vision was very in tune with us and our work and he was able to show our creative processes with impressive clarity, sensitivity and technical skill. Our film is now several years old but still relevant to our practice, it has been shown on many platforms and had many thousand views. It has undoubtedly taken our work to a wider audience and improved our online presence.’

Wales-based studio potters James and Tilla Waters create beautiful earthenware mugs in the peaceful surroundings of their Carmarthenshire studio. I wanted to capture this quiet and contemplative atmosphere, which is a key part of their creative process. Using the structure of the course of a day, I built a cinematic narrative around all the moments that are important to their practice, from the poetry of wild birdsong, to the sensuality of the clay.

This film was selected by Nowness, film festival Reel to Reel, and Mental Health Week film festival Calm.
